Inspired by the moon and ocean spirits from Avatar: The Last Airbender, this painting is about balance, in the natural world and in our own lives.
I watched the show over and over when I was about 13, and I never forgot these two fish. They stayed with me as a symbol of the constant push and pull that keeps the world in balance.
I created the inky background without a plan, trusting it to tell me what belonged there. Eventually, I saw Tui and La circling in the organic flow of color on the canvas. And something that affected me greatly at age 13 became fine art at age 31.
